"What is Obama the President of?"

What?! Obama is the President of the United States!

"Of America?"

What?! Yeah... of America!

"Hmmm. I suppose I haven't really gotten out a lot lately. I didn't know they had another one of those things."

An election?

"Yeah, an election."

Dude. So, who do you think would win?

"Oh, the rapping contest thing? Hmmm. Well, that's kinda tricky.

Why?

Well, what's rapping?

I took this shot a few days before Daniel departed on his Chasing After Harm adventure.

He'd been awake for almost two days straight at this time. The preparations for his trip had him in an interesting state of mind. He was one part exhausted and one part excited. At a certain point those energies kinda become one. I think this photo captures that... his exhaustion and his focus.

After we did a quick shoot inside the studio, we went outside, where he showed me some of the contraptions he'd built for his truck. This door thing is actually one of the coverings for his truck bed.

They were fascinating.

He'd salvaged some huge, old church doors. After cutting them to size, he stripped and painted them, attached hinges to the sides of his truck and laid them across the bed. You opened them using a locking, leverage mechanism he'd also built.

When they were opened, they looked similar to airplane wings. But, after you dropped down table legs he'd also built, the entire bed of the truck become one, huge counter space... a mobile studio thing. Again, it was fascinating.

It's the shadow across his torso that grabs me in this shot. I love how it runs parallel with his arm and jawline. That symmetry kinda puts my eyeballs at ease.

Dan's art is a detail also worth mentioning.

Both of his pieces in this photo are incredibly busy and intense... But, you wouldn't even notice them if I didn't mention them here.

Check out the brand on his fore-arm. Admittedly, it kinda looks like a weird vein or tape worm. Apparently, he did it with a clothes hanger and a butane torch. Now, check out the black-line scribbles at the bottom of the page. It's actually a huge, 4 foot by 5 foot work of art. Which admittedly, also looks like a really weird vein or an army of tape worms.

Dan and I were in full flight when we created this shot. I was handing him all kinds of odd objects, trying to create a scene.

I love the look of placid intensity upon his face. It almost succeeds at entirely distracting from the fact that he's holding a candle and a light bulb.
